I think that its great that a National Grocery Chain is offering an alternative for those awful plastic produce bags. I stopped using them last year when I purchased some cotton mesh reusable produce bags. My bags are made in Canada, by a company called Credobags from Montreal. I'm guessing that the bags Metro is going to have in their stores is going to be imported and made from a synthetic fabric. Its still a step in the right direction.

I suppose that storing cold food in cold containers is OK. The other question, though is avoiding purchasing plastic containers in the first place, since they are made with petroleum, and they're wear out before too long and have to be discarded. Perhaps it's better to buy something that takes more energy to make up front (e.g., glass) but then use it... forever.

Not a bad idea! Just make more of whatever you're making and keep the leftovers for lunches, to add to soups and so forth. I've heard that roasted veggies are great for soups -- I should roast extra with a meat dish, then put some of the veggies aside from a soup day.

Absolutely, Marnie - if an electric train gets its power from a renewable source, such as wind or hydro, ta da, it's a very low impact way to travel. I still hold out hope for better rail in Canada. It makes so much sense for so many reasons.

Here's a Walrus article on the topic:

Thanks for continuing the discussion,. this seems to be a hot issue right now. I think that storing your food in plastic storage containers is alright, I would just not reheat my food in the same containers, just put it on a separate plate.

I try to be strategic when I'm putting food in the fridge and ignore the vegetable crisper, dairy shelf, and such. (Why would I let the fridge tell me where to keep my food?) Whatever will lose freshness first--fish, lettuce, fresh herbs--goes up front and at eye level, so I don't forget it's there. The rutabaga that will last for months goes in the bottom drawer.

This is great news. It is about time they found an alternative to those flimsy plastic bags!
